North American channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus: a neglected but potentially invasive freshwater fish species?

چکیده
Abstract The North American channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus has been introduced to several locations in Europe but received little or no scientific study despite its invasive attributes, including prolific reproduction, tolerance a wide range of conditions, opportunistic feeding, at least partial ‘predator release’, and some evidence environmental impacts (e.g. disease transmission). To assess the species’ potential invasiveness likely risks native species ecosystems Europe, available literature from both America was reviewed used carry out risk screenings for assessment areas, South Italy, using Aquatic Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK), which followed by more detailed evaluation (for Europe) Environmental Impact Classification Alien Taxa (EICAT) protocol. AS-ISK score indicated that is pose high being with EICAT scores indicating “Major” medium confidence levels, respectively. present results emphasise urgent need in-depth studies on populations this understand better so as inform management decisions appropriate control eradication measures invaded water bodies.

We used a two-compartment, clearance volume-based model to examine rubidium and cesium Ž . pharmacokinetics in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus after intravascular administration. We compared the apparent volumes of distribution in the central and peripheral compartments and the intercompartmental and whole-body clearances of both metals at 20.0 8C and 27.5 8C. Biological half-times of Rb we...
متن کاملHigh-quality genome assembly of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus
BACKGROUND The channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), a species native to North America, is one of the most important commercial freshwater fish in the world, especially in the United States' aquaculture industry. Since its introduction into China in 1984, both cultivation area and yield of this species have been dramatically increased such that China is now the leading producer of channel catf...
متن کاملGenetic Monogamy in the Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, a Species with Uniparental Nest Guarding
Behavioral observations have suggested that Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, spawn as monogamous pairs and that males alone provide subsequent care to the resulting embryos and fry. However, genetic monogamy is quite uncommon in fish and is not necessarily correctly predicted by apparent social interactions. Here we develop and employ seven microsatellite loci to address biological parenta...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Activity of Vinegar on Bacterial Species Isolated from Retail and Local Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)
There is an increasing interest in applying natural antimicrobial compounds in the food industry. Consumers are increasingly avoiding the consumption of foods treated with chemicals. Natural alternatives are needed to achieve a high level of safety with respect to foodborne pathogenic microorganisms [1]. The natural sanitizers, such as organic acids, have been investigated because of their bact...
متن کاملIdentification and Characterization of Full-Length cDNAs in Channel Catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and Blue Catfish (Ictalurus furcatus)
BACKGROUND Genome annotation projects, gene functional studies, and phylogenetic analyses for a given organism all greatly benefit from access to a validated full-length cDNA resource. While increasingly common in model species, full-length cDNA resources in aquaculture species are scarce. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Through in silico analysis of catfish (Ictalurus spp.) ESTs, a total ...
